Hyundai History and Milestones

A Legacy of Quality and Innovation

Hyundai has shown the world that the words affordable, capable, and stylish do indeed go together. For more than 50 years Hyundai has been dedicated to producing efficient, reliable automobiles. Read on to learn more about Hyundai’s legacy in Canada and the many honours and awards we’ve collected over the years.

Hyundai in Canada

When Hyundai first came to Canada in 1983 most automobile manufacturers had abandoned the entry-level market in favour of high-end, high-priced vehicles, leaving a large void in the market. First-time car buyers like college students and young families wanted affordable, reliable cars that met their needs and budget. The Hyundai Pony filled this void and as result was the most successful launch of an import car in Canada. Hyundai furthered its success with the launch of the Stellar in 1985 and the Excel in 1986.Today Hyundai has a full-lineup of cars and SUVs to meet the needs of all Canadians.

The Hyundai Lineup

Elantra

Part of the Hyundai family since 1992, the Elantra has been one of Hyundai’s best selling vehicles from the very beginning. Hyundai continues to update the Elantra so it has the newest tech and safety features, but the Elantra remains a small, fuel efficient reliable car. No wonder it was in the running for Motor Trend’s 2017 Car of the Year.

Santa Fe

The Hyundai Santa Fe is a real deal SUV - spacious, capable, feature-packed, and ready to take on just about anything. With a third row of seats you can take the kids, grandpa and grandma, along with a couple of cousins and still have room for the supplies you need on your weekend getaway. You can also drive with confidence when you’re behind the wheel of a Santa Fe - it was named as a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

Veloster

In 2012 Hyundai introduced the all new Veloster. It was a design and a concept that had never been seen before in the automotive industry: a unique hatchback with three doors. The Veloster continues to turn heads wherever it goes. For 2017 the Veloster was honoured as one of 2017’s 10 Coolest Cars by Kelley Blue Book.

Tucson

The Hyundai Tucson is a truly international SUV. As Car and Driver describes it, “Named after an American desert town, styled in Germany, and built in South Korea, the Tucson is a globe-trotting go-getter.”  First introduced in 2004, Hyundai has continued to update the Tucson, ensuring it is among the most feature-filled, safest SUVs available. For 2017 the Tucson was named an IIHS Top Safety Pick+.

Sonata

In 1987, Hyundai took a major step in expanding its lineup with the introduction of the midsize sedan, Sonata. To this day the Hyundai Sonata continues to be one of the most impressive cars in the Hyundai lineup; it was one of the most awarded vehicles of 2016 and to no one’s surprise it’s a 2017 IIHS Top Safety Pick+.

Genesis

In 2010, Hyundai replaced the Tiburon with the exciting Genesis coupe. The coupe combines sleek, eye-catching styling with outstanding performance and handling. The Genesis model line expanded and now Genesis is a luxury brand of its own.

Accent

In 1995, after 8 years in market, the Excel was replaced by the Accent.  In 2012, Hyundai unveiled the completely redesigned Accent 4-door sedan and 5-door hatch to keep up with the times and include the newest accessories and safety features. Updated for 2018, the current Accent is a stylish, durable, and affordable car that continues to be popular among Canadians.
